“One green island split into two kingdoms. But not equal kingdoms, nobody in their right mind would insist on that…”
Liz Lochhead’s bold, funny and irreverent re-telling of the tale of enmity between Elizabeth 1 of England and Mary Queen of Scots. Lochead has described writing the play in 1987 as being “in the context of a debate about the then current state of affairs between Scotland and England”. It is a debate that has continued and intensified in the intervening years, making the play perhaps even more relevant today.
The play is primarily written from a female point of view. First performed in 1987, it is widely acknowledged as a modern Scottish classic. It's feisty, fast-moving, peppered with live music, wit, and cheek.
An amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
